€27,500 per tonne by July 2026.

That’s an increase of roughly:

120%.

In less than a year.

Whey Protein Isolate has also increased substantially, rising from around €20,500 per tonne to approximately €32,500 per tonne over the same period.

Even standard whey powder has risen considerably.

You’ll see terminology like this constantly on protein labels:

Whey Isolate

WPC simply means:

Whey Protein Concentrate.

WPC80 is a concentrated whey ingredient containing around 80% protein on a dry-weight basis before it is flavoured and turned into the finished protein powder you buy.

WPI stands for:

Whey Protein Isolate.

This undergoes further processing and generally contains around 90% or more protein.

For years, these ingredients have formed the backbone of the sports nutrition industry.

Supply often can't.


Is There Actually A Whey Protein Shortage?

Not exactly.

It would probably be more accurate to say we're currently experiencing a:

Tight market for high-protein whey ingredients.

There is still whey being produced.

There is still milk.

There is still cheese production.

But the high-protein fractions that manufacturers want — especially WPC80 and WPI — are in extremely high demand.

And specialist processing capacity is limited.

US data has shown similar pressure.

During early 2026, domestic use of whey protein concentrate increased dramatically compared with the previous year while stocks tightened.

By the summer, US whey protein concentrate inventories were also considerably lower year-on-year.

Again...

This doesn't mean whey is going to disappear.

But it does explain why manufacturers around the world are willing to pay increasingly high prices to secure supply.

One thing I find particularly interesting is how much the whey industry has changed.

Sports nutrition obviously remains huge.

Mainstream grocery products.

The customer base has basically exploded.

I wouldn't sit here and say:

“Ozempic made whey expensive.”

That would massively oversimplify the issue.

If some whey raw materials have more than doubled...

Why haven't retail protein prices doubled too?

Because whey is only one part of the finished cost.
