Alcohol and Testosterone - The nasty truth for all men

Not only is alcohol ruining your ability to recover its also hammering away at your testosterone levels. One study showed some shocking results when measuring testosterone levels and alcohol. The participants who consumed 9+ glasses of alcohol (around 7 pints of lager) saw a 45% decrease in testosterone on the day and a 25% drop the following day! This occurs as the alcohol effectively attacks the testes by impairing the function of the Sertoli cells which is why one study showed that heavy drinkers had significantly smaller testes than non-drinkers, yes you read that right. In regards to muscle building testosterone ‘tells’ your muscles to grow through mTor signalling so it follows that with less testosterone comes less mTor signalling, resulting in fewer gains. A silver lining of this whole paragraph is that light drinking doesn’t have the same effect at all and 1-3 drinks may actually cause increases in testosterone. Unfortunately, we don’t yet know the long term effects of light drinking. If you’re getting serious about your training or diet try limiting your alcohol intake to special occasions.

I understand there is a lot of pressure to drink in English culture as its how we tend to socialise. There’s always drinking involved, just be aware that it’s having a significant effect on your body composition and performance. If you can limit your excessive drinking habits you’ll be amazed at the change in your body composition, performance and mood in general. If you’re wanting to consume alcohol on a diet be sure to track the calories so you don’t end up over-consuming massively. The greasy takeaway at the end of the night may also have to go a miss. You’ll feel better for it in the long run though that’s for certain.
